Holiday Season 2008: Beginning of the End of wrapping paper and Christmas cards For years, our family has been diligent about recycling. But in 2008 we are raising the screen. We eliminate the gift wrap and holidays. Yes, I wrapped my last Christmas and sent my last card. Although we always used gift wrap and holiday cards in the trash and carefully put bows for future use, it just seems like not enough.
Yes, yes, I know you can buy gift wrap and Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Hanukkah cards that are made from recycled materials. But I think it is time to kill these harmful traditional practices for the environment.
Do we really need to wait for Oprah to publish a press release saying it will not be used for gift wrap, no more before we decide to take action? Well, you hate wrapping gifts anyway and you're tired of working hard to wrap the perfect gift Martha Stewart-like only to have instantly destroyed. So what's the problem?
Everything is easier to send holiday cards in the mail anyway!
Judgement you say you want to be more environmentally conscious and begin to actually do something. Something that is easy to do!
Did you know:
** Americans cast 25% more trash during the Thanksgiving holiday period than any other New time of year. This garbage amounts to 25 million additional tons of waste.
** If every family reused in the United States to 2 feet of holiday ribbon, the 38,000 miles of ribbon saved could tie a bow around the entire planet.
** The 2.65 billion Christmas cards sold each year in the United States could fill a football field 10 stories high. If we each sent one card less, we would save 50,000 cubic meters of paper.
From now on holiday, birthday, baby shower gifts and our family will be delivered in a gift bag.
Benefits of gift bags:
** Gift bags are easy to store all I keep mine folded in a drawer.
** Gift bags are easy to use without cutting, no folding, no band.
** Paper bags last gift packaging reused year after year does not look so hot.
Let the packaging industry business gifts by creating a new holiday tradition.
** Provide all the gifts in gift bags.
** Boasting about how many times a bag is reused. * Check the bottom of the bag to the date of printing the oldest of the bag, the better.
** Give an old bag that is a bit tattered shows how much you care about the environment.
