A few years ago when you went to New House someone gave you a gift. A basket of bread with salt etc /? There was a saying that goes with your gift - bread so you will never go hungry salt etc etc Cannot remember what was said and what was happening in the basket ... Everyone remember. Thank you
Bread - So you never hunger.
Wine - While the joy and prosperity may reign forever.
The Salt - So there is always spice in your life.
And a candle - So you always light.
I've never heard of it, but it is a story intresting. I'll have to google and if I find I'll post it.
The other was a can of WD40.
"Bread so you'll never go hungry, the salt so that your life will always be a flavor and a scented candle, bath as well, you know." - Phoebe Buffay
Here's a version. This is based on Italian traditions:
Traditional Housewarming Gifts
By Anthony Parente
One of the most popular requests that I received by e-mail has to do with the traditional gifts house warming. The tradition of giving a new owner a gift for centuries. In today's standards many people might find this gift a little weird, but there is a meaning behind every element that will result in more than one new owner of any donation you could give them.
This custom and tradition is not just something that the Italians did. In fact, there are different cultures that also give gifts to someone who has bought a new house. I remember that when someone buys a new house that you would give that person a broom, salt and bread as a gift, but as you can see below are not the only factors that can give. I'm sure this is not a complete list of items that can give a new owner. If there is a traditional gift or as your family did for the new owners please send me an email listing the issue and the importance of this gift that I can update this list others to continue this tradition.
Importance Item / Gift
Pain - You'll never go hungry
Broom - sweep away the evil, your house is always clean
Candle - You will always light
Seating - Bring good fortune for the year
Honey - Represents the sweetness of life
Olive oil - Health, Light and believe it or not, keep your husband faithful
Plant - You'll still life
Rice - a sign of fertility
Salt - the tears of life is, you can put a pinch of salt on the threshold of each door and window for good luck; Mend all wounds
Wine - Never go thirsty Your home brings you happiness and joy
Wood - Privacy / home will always have the stability, harmony and peace
It was from the movie "Life is Beautiful", where Mary Bailey gave gifts housewarming.
I found this on a blog:
The donations were:
A small whisk broom: sweep evil, your house is always clean.
A shaker of salt: the tears of life is, or put a pinch on the threshold of each door and window for good luck; Mends all wounds
A loaf of bread: You'll never go hungry
A pretty candle in a jar: You always light.
A pot of honey sweetness in life
A bottle of wine you will never go thirsty. Your home brings you happines and joy.
A bottle of olive oil: health, light, and keep your faithful husband.
As far as I know, it's a German tradition. However googling yet found widespread in Russia and in the Jewish community.
Two common themes - bring bread, salt and wine, the other to bring bread, salt and a new broom that it is unlucky to bring an old broom into a new house.
